The mission of Pearl Buck Center Incorporated is to enrich the lives of those affected with disabilities through participation in vocational, recreational and educational programs.
Description:
Pearl Buck Center Incorporated(PBC)provides support to over 500 individuals with developmental disabilities or cognitive limitations in the Eugene/Springfield communities. Vocational services are provided to adults with developmental disabilities. The Families with Special Needs Program offers home-based parent education services to first and subsequent birth parents who have cognitive limitations.Tuition-free year round preschool services are provided typically to children ages 2-5 living in Eugene/Springfield metropolitan area. This unique preschool is accredited by the National Association of the Education of Young Children. The goal of the preschool program is to give children the social and readiness skills they need to enter school ready to learn.
History:
Pearl Buck Center Incorporated has been provided services to those with developmental disabilities since 1955. The programs offered by the organizations evolved as the needs of those we served changed. PBC began as a school for children with developmentally disabilities. As the students reached adulthood the need for work opportunities became important. In the 1960's a production facility was added to provide work opportunities. In the 70's many jobs were found for consumers in the community.The federal laws changed in the mid-1970's requiring communities to educated children with special needs in the community. Slowly over the next 15 years students were assimilated into public schools or graduated from Pearl Buck School.The Families With Special Needs Program began in 1976. This unique program provides a continuum of services for parents with cognitive limitations. Since it began the preschool has offered tuition free preschool for to children ages 2-5 whose parents have cognitive limitations. Case Management services provide advocacy, referral and emotional support to parents and other adults with cognitive limitations.
