To end violence in the home by providing a safe place to stay, providing legal advocacy while working in the community to change attitudes. Serving males and females who have been in an abusive intimate partner relationship. Our vision, our purpose, our work can be defined in one word: Empowerment. We are here to empower our clients to think for themselves, to see themselves as worthy, capable individuals.

Description:
The Northwest Georgia Family Crisis Center is one of the many shelters for victims of domestic violence. Our services include a 24 hour Hotline, emergency shelter, crisis intervention, case management, safety planning, legal and social service advocacy, support groups, parenting program, outreach, follow-up services, individual support, referral services to social services, mental health services, employment services, and medical services. All services are confidential

History:
The need for the shelter was recognized in 1978 by the League of Women Voters and the Dalton Junior Women's Club. The doors opened in 1980 at a facility donated by the First baptist Church. The shelter became a United Way agency that year. Betty Higgins was a long time director from 1980, until retiring. Katora Printup is currently director. The crisis center also has outreach programs in Murray and Gordon counties and operates a shelter for children in foster care who have no home to go to.
