Event Description:
The “Reality Store” is a simulated program that helps 9th grade students to critically think about their future in terms of career planning, family timing and the financial resources they will need to support their desired lifestyle. Students will explore adult responsibilities which includes: Earning wages, paying bills, understand what it costs to run a household, how buying decisions affect earnings and determining a financial need from a want. In this simulation, students are approximately ten years out of high school or around 28 years old and are making life decisions based on their selected life style, career choice and family needs. Students are given a months’ salary for their chosen career, and then must visit various stations, paying the same types of bills that we all pay monthly: housing, insurance, utilities, transportation, child care, grocery, etc. Students will discover whether their chosen occupation will support their desired lifestyle. At the end of the simulation, students will understand the impact of an education, career development and life choices. Each student will be able to visit with a professional to determine what changes they could have implemented to ensure a positive financial outcome.
Volunteers are needed:
To make this a successful event for our students, we need volunteers from the community to staff various stations in both the morning and afternoon shifts. This is a fun and interactive experience for our students and volunteers! All information and materials are provided to volunteers ahead of time. You do not have to develop or plan anything. Simply, volunteer and plan on having a fun filled experience. We are looking forward to partnering with you and creating an educational experience for our students! If your company is not able to attend but would like to show support, we are accepting company’s promotional or marking items such as pens, pencils, etc. Donated items will be given to students during the event.
